John Shimkus, the (Possible) Next Chairman of the U.S. Congressional Committee on Energy and Environment Does Not Accept Global Warming. He Accepts the Bible.

Okay, it's rant time. Here's an article from The Star.com detailing the anti global warming stance held by Republican (of couse) U.S. Representative John Shimkus, and his reasons for holding an antiscientific position (article first, then the rant):

U.S. Representative John Shimkus, possible future chairman of the Congressional committee that deals with energy and its attendant environmental concerns, believes that climate change should not concern us since God has already promised not to destroy the Earth.

Cont'd:
Shimkus, an evangelical Christian and a Republican member of the House from Illinois, on Tuesday signalled his desire to become chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

The Energy and Commerce committee is among the most powerful in the U.S. Congress, with a wide-ranging purview over legislation touching on energy policy, environmental initiatives and public health.

Shimkus already serves on the committee. During a hearing in 2009, he dismissed the dangers of climate change and the warnings of the scientific community by quoting the Bible.

First, he noted God’s post-Flood promise to Noah in Genesis 8:21-22.

“Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though all inclinations of his heart are evil from childhood and never again will I destroy all living creatures as I have done.

“As long as the earth endures, seed time and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, will never cease.”

“I believe that’s the infallible word of God, and that’s the way it’s going to be for his creation,” Shimkus said.

Then he quoted Matthew 24:31.

“And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds from one end of the heavens to the other.”

“The Earth will end only when God declares it’s time to be over. Man will not destroy this Earth. This Earth will not be destroyed by a Flood,” Shimkus asserted. “I do believe that God’s word is infallible, unchanging, perfect.”

Following the Republican wave in the recent Congressional elections, the committee will shift from Democratic to Republican leadership.

On Tuesday, Shimkus sent a letter to his colleagues burnishing his credentials by saying he is “uniquely qualified among a group of talented contenders to lead the Energy and Commerce Committee.”
Okay, where do I begin? First off, as I have already determined, Global Warming is real, and it is certainly (at least partly) anthropogenic in origin. There is NO DEBATING this. The only people attempting to do so are peopel who are ignorant of the facts, and people who are fighting the truth for ideological and/or financial reasons. The climatologists themselves aren't divided on the existence of AGW.

Perhaps someone should email this Shimkus dumbass that link so he can bone up on the science behind AGW.

Okay, so that's problem number one. AGW is real. He thinks it is not.

Problem number two:

SOMEONE WHO DENIES AGW IS ON A FUCKING ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE, AND MIGHT EVEN GO SO FAR AS TO BE THE FUCKING CHAIRMAN OF SAID COMMITTEE?

WHAT THE FUCK?????!!!!!!!

I know the United States of America is going through a bit of a crisis right now. I know that religion is out of control, education is on the decline, people are angry and so the republicans, who cater to and foster that anger, have gained some momentum as of late, and I know that science denial goes hand in hand with both religion and conservatism (the trifecta of misery) but you'd think that somehow, some way, the bounds of reason, stretched thin as they may be down there in the good ol' US of A, would not allow this to happen. I mean, this committee is supposed to be dealing with issues surrounding energy and environment. So, it's only logical to assume that the person chairing this fucking thing would be someone well versed in ISSUES INVOLVING ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT!!!

Then again, maybe it's just me. Maybe I am projecting my liberal ideology onto the U.S. Congress. I mean, do the representatives in charge of a specific area have to be an expert on whatever subject matter that area may cover?

Nah.

I mean, you tell me, which chairman would engender more confidence in you?

Chairman A) “This is what we face in terms of potentiality when looking at future harm caused by anthropogenic global warming. These are the energy related measures we can put into place to bring us out of the danger zone, and to bring us forth into a new future: one replete with safe, cost effective, clean energy, and a climate that does not threaten us with a major shift in temperature- We cannot afford to sit on our laurels and do nothing. While we may not be immediate danger, we acknowledge the scientific truths presented to us by our climatologists the world over, and we recognize that some proactivity on our part today will pay off tomorrow. With the proper energy policies in place, we will no longer have to live with the threat of anthropogenic global warming looming over our heads.”

OOOORRRRR

Chairman B) “Climate change should not concern us since God has already promised not to destroy the Earth. Genesis 8:21-22 tells us Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though all inclinations of his heart are evil from childhood and never again will I destroy all living creatures as I have done. As long as the earth endures, seed time and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, will never cease. I believe that’s the infallible word of God, and that’s the way it’s going to be for his creation. Also, Matthew 24:31 tells us that ...he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call.....”

Which sounds like something you should be hearing from the Chairman of an Energy and Environment Committee in the United States Congress?

Another thing that amazes me is that there's a third level to this guy's ignorance. He quoted Genesis talking about God never again cursing the ground and destroying all living creatures....WHICH IS GOD TALKING ABOUT THE GLOBAL FLOOD.......WHICH IS A FUCKING SCIENTIFIC IMPOSSIBLITY THAT NEVER, EVER HAPPENED!

THIS ASSHOLE IS DENYING SCIENCE IN TWO DIFFERENT FUCKING DIRECTIONS!

First he denies that which is true, and then posits that which is false! And he's already on the fucking energy/environment committee?!

THIS IS MADNESS!!!!!

Oh, WAIT! There's a FOURTH level to his idiocy! The stupid Genesis quote, which he uses to back up his dumbass claims, talks about killing all of the life on Earth and the world not ending. The stupid Matthew quote talks about their not being another (lol) worldwide flood......plus, he adds, in his own cutesy little colourful commentary based upon the wealth of knowledge that his little fairy tale has afforded him (fit for a leader, he is!) that “the Earth will end only when God declares it’s time to be over. Man will not destroy this Earth. This Earth will not be destroyed by a Flood.”

ANTHROPOGENIC GLOBAL WARMING DOES NOT SAY “AND MAN WILL CURSE THE GROUND, AND THERE WILL BE A WORLDWIDE FLOOD, AND ALL OF THE LIFE WILL DIE, AND THE WORLD WILL END.”

HE DOESN'T EVEN FUCKING UNDERSTAND THE BASICS OF AGW, LET ALONE THE FUCKING SCIENCE BEHIND IT!!!

This guy shouldn't be in fucking congress, let alone on a fucking committee that's supposed to set policy dealing with energy and the environment!!!

THINK ABOUT IT!! HOW CAN YOU PUT AGUY IN CHARGE OF SETTING ENVIRONMENTAL AND ENERGY POLICY.......IF HE BELIEVES THAT THE MAGIC MAN IN THE SKY IS TAKING CARE OF IT ALL AND THERE'S NOTHING TO BE DONE?

This is BAD. I mean, this is really fucking BAD.

It's bad enough when the general public is this uninformed, ignorant, unedcuated, illogical, irrational, superstitious and stupid, but now your fucking LEADERS are as well?

WHAT THE FUCK, AMERICA? WHAT THE FUCK? WHAT'S NEXT? PUT SOME PEOPLE WHO THINK THAT THE ECONOMY IS IN GOD'S HANDS AND THEREFORE NOTHING COULD OR SHOULD BE DONE TO TRY AND INFLUENCE IT IN CHARGE OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE?

I'm so fucking flabbergasted and annoyed that I have forgotten the rest of what I wanted to say, but fuck it. What else can be said?

FIX YOUR SHIT BEFORE YOU DRAG THE REST OF US DOWN WITH YOU.

  1. First off I think anyone holding a political office should not be able to bring their religion into their decisions.

Secondly I could have sworn there was something about helping ourselves in the bible. Why don't more of them just do that?

It is scary that people can actually use belief to make decisions. I want my decisions made based on fact or at least something studied and educationally guessed at.

    2) They pick and choose based on what best aligns with their already held beliefs.
