There may be a basis in the case of some individuals, as perhaps when a male prostitute uses a condom, where this can be a first step in the direction of a moralization, a first assumption of responsibility...Two nights ago, Vatican priest Father Joseph Fessio spoke to NPR's Mary Louise Kelly and issued a 'clarification.' Here's what he said:
He's not giving a scale of evil or good here. But let me give you a pretty simple example. Let's suppose we've got a bunch of muggers who like to use steel pipes when they mug people. But some muggers say, gosh, you know, we don't need to hurt them that badly to rob them. Let's put foam pads on our pipes. Then we'll just stun them for a while, rob them and go away. So if the pope then said, well, yes, I think that using padded pipes is actually a little step in a moral direction there, that doesn't mean he's justifying using padded pipes to mug people. He's just saying, well, they did something terrible, but while they were doing that, they had a little flicker of conscience there that led them in the right direction. That may grow further, so they stop mugging people completely. So according to the Vatican, having sex is a heinous, immoral act, and using a condom while having sex is like wrapping your weapon in foam during a mugging; ie, still a heinous, immoral act, but with small signs of a moral disposition which may lead to them eventually no longer mugging people (aka having sex).
They are villifying the natural biological process that is responsible for us even being here in the first place; a process, I might add, which has many associated short and long term positive effects (both physcial and psychological) apart from life creation. And then on top of it, they are villifying the act of mitigating the possible negative consequences of this act.
They're so out of touch it's fucking comical. Or at least, it would be if it wasn't so harmful.
I mean, really, how the fuck can anyone take these morons seriously? It's 2010. They sound like voices from the middle ages.
YOU ARE NO LONGER RELEVANT AND THIS IS BECOMING FAST APPARENT. GO AWAY AND STOP HARMING PEOPLE, ASSHOLES.
Isn't that really telling people that their being evil either way, so they might as well not use the condom anyways?
ReplyDeleteSounds like a message that could go terribly wrong to me.
Well, he's saying that the fact that they are using one shows that they have the potential to be moral people.
ReplyDeleteWhat sad fucking ideology.
